Dermaplaning in Irvine: Cost, Results and Who It Suits

Dermaplaning in Irvine: Cost, Results and Who It Suits

Dermaplaning in Irvine costs $90 for a 45-minute visit at our studio. A sterile blade gently lifts fine facial fuzz and the top layer of dead skin, leaving a smooth surface for about three to four weeks. It suits dull or rough skin and is not for active breakouts.

What is dermaplaning and what does it actually remove?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation where a trained professional glides a fine blade across the face to remove vellus hair and the dead cells sitting on the surface. It does not go into living skin, and it is not a peel.

Vellus hair is the pale, soft fuzz you see in side light on your cheeks and forehead. It catches powder, makes foundation look patchy and traps dead cells against the skin. Taking it off along with the top layer of flakes gives you a flatter, brighter surface. Products you apply afterward also sit more evenly, so many clients say their serums feel like they absorb better.

What dermaplaning does not do matters just as much:

Expert tip from Aida Khazieva

Dermaplaning will not make hair grow back thicker, and it will not touch dark chin or lip hair for good. Skip it when your skin has active breakouts.

What happens during a dermaplaning visit?

A dermaplaning visit is a short, quiet routine: cleanse, check, glide, soothe and protect. Aida moves in a set order so no area is rushed.

  1. Cleanse and check. Makeup and oil come off, and Aida looks for breakouts, irritation, sunburn or anything that rules out the blade that day.
  2. Prep. The skin is dried and held taut, one section at a time.
  3. Glide. A sterile blade is held at a shallow angle and moves in short, feathery strokes across the cheeks, forehead, nose sides, chin and jaw.
  4. Soothe. A calming product goes on to settle any pinkness.
  5. Protect. Sunscreen finishes the visit, and you get a few home care notes.

Most people feel a light scrape, like a soft brush. Skin may look a little pink for an hour or so. You can usually return to work or dinner plans the same day.

Does hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

No, hair does not grow back thicker, darker or faster because of dermaplaning. The blade cuts hair at the surface and does not touch the follicle below, which is what controls the hair's thickness and color.

The belief persists because cut hair has a blunt tip instead of a fine taper. For a few days it can feel slightly prickly, and in the mirror it may look more visible against a smooth cheek. A few weeks later the hair is back to its original softness.

The same logic explains why dermaplaning cannot give permanent results. A follicle that is untouched will produce a new hair. If your goal is to get rid of coarse chin or lip hair for good, read about electrolysis, which targets the follicle itself.

What results can you expect, and how long do they last?

Most clients notice smoother skin and brighter tone right away, and the effect typically lasts about three to four weeks. This is a general pattern, not a promise, and results vary with skin type and routine.

TimingWhat many clients notice
Same daySoft, flat surface, mild pinkness that fades
Days 2 to 7Makeup applies more evenly, products feel easier to apply
Weeks 2 to 3Fuzz begins to return, surface cells build up again
Weeks 3 to 4Time for a repeat visit if you want to keep the effect

Dermaplaning is a maintenance treatment, so one visit gives a short boost and a few visits in a row give a steadier baseline. It will not change fine lines or deeper tone issues on its own, and Aida will say so if a different treatment fits your goal better.

Who is a good candidate for dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning fits adults with dull, dry or rough skin, visible peach fuzz and a calm complexion. It also helps if you wear makeup often and want a smoother base.

Brides often use it a week before the wedding as part of a bigger plan. Our bridal facial timeline shows where it fits.

Who should skip dermaplaning?

Skip dermaplaning if you have active, inflamed breakouts, a sunburn, open skin, cold sores or a recent strong peel. The blade should only glide over healthy, intact skin.

If you have acne but want smoother skin once it settles, an acne facial plan is usually the better first step.

Aida is a licensed cosmetologist, not a physician. She does not diagnose skin conditions. If a spot is changing in color, shape or size, bleeds or does not heal, please see a dermatologist before any facial treatment.

Dermaplaning, microdermabrasion or a peel: which should you pick?

Pick dermaplaning for fuzz and a smooth surface, microdermabrasion for texture and congestion, and a peel for tone or deeper renewal. Each one works on a different layer or problem.

Prices for every peel are listed in our chemical peel price guide. If you are unsure which route suits your skin, the free skin analysis helps you decide before you spend.

Can you combine dermaplaning with other treatments?

Yes, but order and spacing matter. Dermaplaning removes the top layer of cells, so active ingredients and peels penetrate more easily afterward and skin becomes more reactive.

That means Aida usually does not stack dermaplaning with a peel on the same day. She separates them by one to two weeks, or picks one based on your goal. LED light therapy at $65 is a gentle add-on that can follow a dermaplaning visit the same day when skin looks calm. Microcurrent and lymphatic drainage massage are better scheduled on a different day from the blade.

If you are also planning hair removal on the face, mention it when booking. Treated areas need to settle before anything exfoliating goes over them.

What should you do before and after dermaplaning?

Keep skin calm for a few days before, and protect it carefully afterward. The new surface has no thick layer of dead cells to shield it from sun and irritation.

Before your visit:

After your visit:

  1. Apply SPF 30 or higher every morning, and reapply if you are outdoors.
  2. Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturizer for 48 hours.
  3. Wait about 48 hours before retinol, acids or scrubs.
  4. Skip hot yoga, saunas and swimming pools for the first day.
  5. Do not pick at any small dry patches.

Does dermaplaning help with makeup, aging and dark spots?

Dermaplaning improves how makeup looks and how skin feels, but it only lightly affects aging signs and dark spots. It works on the surface, so deeper issues need a different plan.

For makeup, the change is easy to see. Powder and foundation no longer cling to fuzz, and concealer looks more even. For fine dryness lines that come from flaking skin, smoothing the surface can make them look softer, but real wrinkles remain. For dark spots, repeated surface renewal helps a little, yet a targeted peel such as the pigmentation peel is the stronger option. We cover those options in our guide to treatments for dark spots.

For firmness and contour, other treatments make more sense, including microcurrent facials.

How much does a dermaplaning routine cost over a year?

A year of dermaplaning every four weeks costs about $1,170 at single-visit prices, while an event-only plan can be as low as $90. Most clients land somewhere between the two.

PlanVisits per yearCost
One-time, before an event1$90
Seasonal, every 3 months4$360
Every 6 weeks8$720
Every 4 weeks13$1,170

You do not need to commit to a schedule. Aida will tell you after the first visit whether more frequent visits make sense for your skin.

What if you also have dark hair on your lip or chin?

Dermaplaning will make the area feel smooth for a few days, but dark, coarse hair grows back quickly and will not be permanently removed. The method that does that is electrolysis.

Many clients start with dermaplaning for the fuzz and later add electrolysis for the stubborn hairs on the lip or chin. Aida is also a licensed electrologist, which means both can be planned in one place. Upper lip electrolysis starts at $50 for 20 minutes, and you can read the details on the upper lip electrolysis page. If you prefer to talk before deciding, the electrolysis consultation is free.

Questions

How much is dermaplaning in Irvine?

Dermaplaning at our Irvine studio costs $90 and takes 45 minutes. Add-ons such as LED light therapy ($65) or a pigmentation peel ($110) are booked separately, and Aida can tell you which pairings make sense for your skin.

Does dermaplaning make hair grow back thicker?

No. Dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair at the skin surface, and hair cut this way grows back with the same texture. It can feel stubbly for a few days because the tip is blunt, which is where the myth comes from.

Is dermaplaning the same as shaving my face?

They use a similar motion, but the goal differs. Dermaplaning is done by a trained professional with a surgical-style blade at a controlled angle, and it also lifts the top layer of dead skin cells. Home razors are not made for that.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

Most clients feel a light scraping or tickling, not pain. The skin is held taut and the blade moves in short strokes. If an area is sensitive, such as the jawline or upper lip, tell Aida and she will adjust.

How often should I get dermaplaning?

Many clients book every 3 to 4 weeks, which matches the natural renewal cycle of skin. Going more often than every 3 weeks is rarely needed. Aida may space visits further apart if your skin is thin or reactive.

Can I get dermaplaning with acne?

Not over active, inflamed breakouts, because the blade could spread bacteria and irritate lesions. If your acne is calm and only texture remains, it may be fine. See our acne facial guide for what we do instead during a flare.

Can dermaplaning remove a mustache or chin hair?

It only removes fine, light fuzz. Dark, coarse hair on the lip or chin grows back with a blunt tip within days. For permanent removal of those hairs, electrolysis is the method the FDA allows to be marketed as permanent.

Can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?

Yes, after a short break. Most clients wait a few hours and use clean mineral products. Sunscreen is the one step you should not skip, because freshly exfoliated skin burns more easily.
